Louise Landes Levi - From The Ming Oracle LP

Louise Landes Levi is an American poet and musician who played with the Floating Lotus Magic Opera Company, collaborating there with Angus MacLise, Terry Riley, as well as with LaMonte Young and Marian Zazeela in the Theatre Of Eternal Music. She went on to study Indian raga music with top masters and she plays the sarangi, a bowed harp-like Nepali/Indian instrument. On this lp she is accompanied by Hilary Jeffery, trombone player in the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble. This is amazing meditative raga drone that must be heard. 2014 LP on Sloowax (vinyl sublabel of Bart DePaepe's Sloow Tapes).

Skullflower - (almost) complete discography Part 1

So, at the request of a dear commenter, I hereby present the discography of Skullflower. Apologies for the delay in doing so but things have pretty hectic. Due to the lack of time, comments on the albums, as well album covers, will be limited. After all, Skullflower and their importance in the formation of the noise/drone scene by including live traditional rock instruments rather than electronics has been extensively documented in many blogs. If I find the time, I might come back to the post and include covers and whatnot. This first part will cover SF's initial run from the late-80s to 1996. Part 2 will come soon-ish.

1987 - Bull & Gate Oct 7, 1987 download

This is an early SF live recording released in 2012 by Shock and Dirter Promotions, featuring Matthew Bower, Stuart Dennison, Stefan Jaworzyn and Gary Mundy of Ramleh. I had found this on a blog, but unfortunately I can't seem to find the link to lead to that blog, so I have uploaded it. If the original uploader sees this and wants me to link to his post, please send a comment.

1988 - Birthdeath

More specifically, I'm including both the original version and the Kino I: Birthdeath reissue. As is shown in Stephen Jaworzyn's liner notes in the reissue, tracks 1 and 2 are from 1987 and unreleased, track 3 is also unreleased and probably their earliest recording (1986), track 4 is from 1988 and probably from the Form Destroyer sessions, track 5 from 1988, tracks 6 and 7 ("Birthdeath" and "Grub Song") are not the versions found on the original lp, but are the remixes from the Ruins LP, tracks 8 and 9 ("Timebomb" and "Blood Harvest") are the original Birthdeath versions and tracks 10 is unreleased. The original was released in 1988 on Broken Flag and the reissue in 2013 on Shock/Dirter Promotions.

Gerry Hemingway - Chamber Works

Gerry Hemingway is an avant-garde jazz percussionist and composer, who played with Anthony Braxton in the 1980s-90s as well as with  Cecil Tayor and Evan Parker. This cd contains superb chamber music/ modern classical for a string quarter as well as quintet and sextet, without resorting to violent discordance, but including influences from jazz as well. Highly recommended. 1999 cd on Tzadik.

Regler ‎– Regel #4 (HNW) cd

Regler is the project of Anders Bryngelsson of Brainbombs and Mattin. The idea of Regler is to play a variety of music genres just with rock instruments, particularly guitar and drums, and to deconstruct them at their basic core. Notable experiments include their amazing drone piece, a recent blues album, dbeat hardcore punk, and an outrageous take on classical music. The album here is a dissection of Harsh Noise Wall, without any walls of electronic distortion, but just with a truly punk-spirited savage noisecore annihilation of drums and guitar, albeit never going into grindcore mode. Arguably this is much more compulsive, unpleasant and unlistenable than almost all HNW works. As Vomir says in his liner notes this is Hardcore Wall. 2015 cd co-released by Pilgrim Talk, Decimation Sociale, Rapid Moment, and At War With False Noise.

Anla Courtis ‎– Antofagasta cd

This is a collection of field recordings made by Anla Courtis during a 1998 trip to the volcanic area of Antofagasta De La Sierra in Argentina, covered with shrubs, as obvious from the pics. The sounds include various percussive-like ones (probably from the bells of sheep herded in the area?), the horns of trucks passing by the highways, and the wind lashing the dry landscape, all edited and reworked by Courtis to make a sonic impression of the ecosystem. It's a mostly loud but hypnotizing affair ideal for isolation in a sparsely-built area as the one that provided the inspiration for this amazing cd. 2016 cd on Beartown.

Noisegate - As We Were Walking cd

I bought this cd many years ago, as I had heard they had a member of Neurosis play in them and I thought it would be similar to Tribes of Neurot. Well, truly it's not so far away from ToN, but it's far more exploratory and daring in its combination and alteration of droning dark ambiences, epic washes of static and an amazing old-school ambient ghost-like conclusion. This is the first track from Noisegate's Suspended Animation cd, as it was performed live a 2000 tour. 2001 cd on Manufracture. Thanks to Spook for inspiring to upload this one through his Noisegate posts.

Minamata - Niigata cd

Violent industrial madness, the very meaning of what industrial sounds like. Deafening, unpenetrating noise, punishing minimal rhythms and tortured screams reflecting the condition of the victims of the Niigata Minamata disease caused in 1965 by mercury poisoning passing through the food chain and causing limb numbness, weakened vision and hearing/speech damage. This is the 2007 Zone De Confusion cd re-release of the legendary 1986 cassette.

Nat Birchall - 4 albums (The Sixth Sense, World Without Form, Invocations, Creation)

Nat Birchall is a tenor and soprano sax player from Manchester who plays amazing soulful jazz in the direction of Pharoah Sanders, John Coltrane and Alice Coltrane. He as also played in albums by fellow Mancunian trumpet player Matthew Halsall, owner of Gondwana Records, on which he has released two albums. Below are four of Nat's albums.

Nat Birchall - The Sixth Sense

This 1999, much underrated debut album is less immersed in spirituality and possesses a stronger hard-bop sound and contains a cover of McCoy Tyner's "Passion Dance." 1999 cd on Sixth Sense.

Nat Birchall - World Without Form

This is his fifth album, and having heard the previous two, Akhenaten and Sacred Dimension, I think this is the one where he moves toward spirituality and sky-reaching majesty, whereas the aforementioned albums were still in a Coltraney My Favorite Things vein before he himself went up in the sky with Ascension. Contains the amazing piano playing of Adam Fairhall and the supreme ballad "Dream of Eden." 2012 cd on Sound Soul And Spirit.

Nat Birchall - Invocations

This is even deeper and more soulful, while also being more free-form. Includes a cover of Coltrane's "To Be." Highly recommended shit. 2015 cd on Jazzman.

Nat Birchall - Creation

His latest album has an amazing sense of uplifting, liveliness and intensity not found so much in his earlier stuff, and this is certainly influenced by the inclusion of two drummers. Whereas the cosmic vibe - central in all albums - up to this point was more reliant on atmosphere, here it reaches another level accentuated by the energy of the players, who are constantly sprouting colors and ideas.
